The Dept of General Practice in UCC has launched a new 12 week blended learning CPD accredited postgraduate dementia module for GPs. 

This module consists of eight distance learning units involving structured group discussion of case studies run over 12 weeks and supported by two workshop days onsite at UCC in October/November. The units will include:

Unit 1         Pathophysiology and Assessment of Dementia
Unit 2         Post Diagnostic Support
Unit 3         Assessing Capacity and Legal Issues in Dementia
Unit 4         Driving in Dementia
Unit 5         Risk Assessment & Caring for the Carer
Unit 6         Medications in Dementia
Unit 7         Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia
Unit 8         Advanced Dementia & Palliative Care

Each unit will be facilitated by a GP experienced in dementia care and/ or a Geriatrician or Old Age Psychiatrist. Participation in the online discussion forums is flexible and can be done in your own time.


Total Marks 200: Continuous Assessment.  Participation in online discussion boards (50%), written assignments and final essay (50%)

CPD satisfaction

The 2 study days will be accredited by the ICGP for 12 external CPD credits and 4 GMS study leave sessions.  Time spent on online learning can be logged for internal and personal CPD credits with the ICGP.   

Important Dates for 2018

Closing Date for Applications: End of June 2018
Induction: September 2018.
Online Distance Learning: Starts mid September 2018.
Workshops:  9am-5pm on Saturday.
Saturday, 20th October 2018
Saturday, 17th November, 2018

Cost: €850

Part funding may be available this year from the PREPARED project for successful applicants.
