Understanding Cognitive Disorders and Dementia (UCC)

Who is the programme suitable for?

All relevant health care discipline, includes but is not limited to medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, speech and hearing science, audiology, physiotherapy, psychology, and social studies

Brief Description

In this module we introduce dementia and its various sub-types and focus on the basic processes of cognition. Students will develop an understanding of the assessment diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia. Specific topics include: Risk factors and prevention of dementia; Language versus memory in assessment; Dementia sub-types; Diagnosing and disclosing diagnoses; Treatment of memory impairment and non-cognitive symptoms of dementia. This is a blended learning module, including online lectures and readings, as well as 4 contact days of workshops with experienced lecturer-practitioners in UCC.
